As a British South Asian artist, Shivani Patel’s practice explores the intricate layers of cultural heritage, diaspora and the complexities of dual identity. As a 2022 graduate in Ba (Hons) Photography at Manchester School of Art, she ignites meaningful dialogues surrounding these themes within her artwork. Within Patel’s photography, she embeds self-portraiture, storytelling, semiotics and still life. Expanding her visual approach, her work incorporates tangible materials through textiles and sculptures. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences, Patel weaves narratives that transcend borders, capturing moments that resonate with the shared understandings of the South Asian diaspora. She aspires to cultivate a heightened awareness and nuanced understanding of South Asian beliefs within the context of Western environments, striving to bridge cultural divides and foster connection.
